LO3: Contact sheet and evaluation

I choose _MG_5795.JPG over all other landscape photos as the location was a good location as the background was dark and his face was lit but it wasn't using the flash so he does not look washed out. Out of these 4 photos this is my favourite as it is a medium close up so it follows the conventions of other magazines as most magazines use pictures with this distance as it's close enough to Lewis for lewis to be the focus of the front page.
For the double page spread I used _MG_5756.JPG as I liked this location because it suited my genre as it was kind of broken down like the masthead of kerning and the lighting was ok, with a bit of tweaking on the curves it should be good. There was enough room in this photo for my body copy to go on one side with Lewis on the other side, keeping Lewis as the main subject on the page as he is important because the entire DPS is about him.
For the contents page I used the image _MG_5781.JPG as I like Lewis's face in this as he is slightly smirking like he just doesn't care which sticks to the rebellious behaviour of rock stars.

LO3: following codes and conventions

These two magazines are similar as both models in the photos are wearing similar clothes doing similar poses as this follows the conventions of the rock genre. Banners are put over the words to make them more readable in the real magazine so that is what I have done in my magazine. The main coverline is big and is anchored to the main cover photo, this also stands out a lot with the artists name being the biggest I have followed this convention as It means that the main feature is advertised the most and if this singer or band on the front cover is someone that the audience likes it means they are more likely to read the magazine. I put more coverlines on around the photo this is used in the Kerrang magazine as it advertises the magazine even more which they want as it increases the likeliness that someone's going to pick up the magazine. I used similar colours to Kerrang as blue and yellow are very energetic and bright colours which really fit in with this genre.

My magazine follows the layout of Kerrangs contents as this is a easy to read and navigate design where the the sections and pages are clearly shown down the right side and there is a main photo on the left this is here as it is the most important page so it gets a lot more advertisement then the rest of the pages as it is more likely to interest the reader. The editors section is on the bottom as it is the least import part of the contents page. At the top is the masthead again, to create a brand and contents written out clearly to clearly show the reader that this page is the contents.

The picture has a whole page to itself as this person is really important and so is shown off to the audience as much as possible. The section that this DPS is in is shown clearly in the top left corner as this gives the audience an idea of what the article is roughly going to be about. Another thing that gives the audience an Idea of what the article is going to be like is the title and sub-title, the title is usually a quote of the name of the person because the reader may not know who it is. The sub title explains more about the person and what is actually going off at that point in their life just to fill the reader in. The interview is distinctly separated into questions and answers with mine the font colour changes with Kerrangs the questions are highlighted.

LO3: Setting up Adobe InDesign CS6

Contents page:
DPS:
The pages are big so I can fit a lot into each page as my magazine is released monthly so I would like to fit as much as possible into each page. These are the page sizes that I originally decided to use and wrote in my proposal on my media pack so I must stick to these measurements as well because this is the size that the advertisements will be.

LO3: Setting up Adobe Photoshop CS6

I used the sizes said in my proposal, I used these sizes as it is quite big and I would like to be able to fit a lot into each page as other magazines like Kerrang fit lots into theres and mine isn't released as often as Kerrang so using bigger pages to fit in more would keep the reader entertained longer. The resolution is at 300 to create a lossless high quality image which we will need as we are making a print product which must be high quality as if a low quality image is printed it is really evident of how low quality the image is making the magazine look low quality.

LO3 Body copy for articles

What has been your biggest inspiration when making music?
Lewis Bye: "Well when I was younger the sort of music that was popular was like hip-hop and punk and it really wasn't my cup of tea, so I did what any kid would and went to my dad about it and he suggested to me the bands he listened to when he was younger such as Guns And Roses and Meat Loaf and I was really into them and I listened to a lot of those bands throughout my childhood, which really was a big inspiration, I'm not sure if it comes across In my music but I do base my music of that style."  Where has been your best gig?
well I've played in many places In the past and it's going to be really hard to pick one, there's certanly some I'm not going to say because they weren't that good, but there's been some
really amazing places I've played. Out of all of the places I've played though it between West street live or The Harley Hotel , the crowds where just amazing and I was just in a good mood as well

Where are you looking forward to play?
IM definitely looking forward to going back to the Harley hotel or West Street Live, but as for new places Im not really sure
it's hard to predict what a show is going to be like before you've actually been to a place, I've heard a lot of good things about the plug up near The Moor so I would like to maybe organize something there. As for far into the future it would be
absolutely amazing if one day I could play in the arena, but that will be only if I become a bigger musician. What have you been up to, regarding music?Well Im working on my second EP which Im really looking forward to because my first one really went down well, and I hope this one is even better, I think it is listening back to some of the stuff thats already nearly finished. It should be ready by the end of the year and will have 4 songs on it, but that's only if everything goes to plan, it might be postponed if
something bad happens. I've also been doing live shows like I've said before and I'm planning to do more so I'm organizing all that.Do you try to get across any theme in your music?
I think I'm trying to keep the origina I think I'm trying to keep the original meaning of rock and being rebellious and just not caring about societies guidelines, which I believe is important in this day and age as I just thing people are becoming more and more sensitive and willing to give into expectations of the world. I try to stay away from the love side of things because that's something that I believe has made it through to modern music and I just don't want to follow that cliche. So in all I just want to bring back that uncontrollable style of rock that just shouldn't have ever left. What emotions do you want to feel when seeing you live?
I don't know how to explain the feeling I'm thinking of but it's like a power within you to be different or special, where you just don't care about what other people think, you only care about yourself and your friends being happy.

What has been the best era for music in your opinion?
well thats quite a big question to answer i definately say it isn't the 00's as i wasn't really into that sad emo s@&t honestly i prefer something that is more powerfull and straight forward so honestly i'd have to say 80's and 90's rock as it was new and rebellious and bands like guns and roses and R.E.M just to name two of them i know i wasn't around during those times but looking back that is definately an era that i would have lived through it's changed a lot now the rock ain't really rock anymore and i just can't seem to get into it. I wouldn't say its bad but just not my style that's why i try to keep the old style and bring it to the modern world. Is image important to you?
Yes of corse it is i'm not going to sit here and lie and say i don't care about it at all. i do care about it though it's how i'm seen by the public so it is obiously going to be important to me it can change if i'm successful or unsucessful you know?.
And finally do you have anything to say to Amp and it's audience?
thanks for having me here it's been fun. i definately feel like i opend up and showed a side of me that a lot of people didn't know was there so it's been good to get that out. and to the reader whos hopefully a fan thanks so much for supporting me in my work and i know that most bands and singers say that they woudn't be anything without it's fans but honestly once you're in their position you understand just how much they mean it. thanks for reading and goodbye.

This has the mode of address peer to peer as Lewis Bay is a rock star and they don't want to be seen as posh and professional, they actually want to be seen as the opposite. Since I am targeting rock fans they want this style too. This mode of address suits that style as it makes Lewis sound more chilled out like he doesn't care which is the feel that rock stars are meant to have. I also censor the word shit as since my target audience is in the teens I do not want to include vulgar language or anything that could be seen as obscene for them.

LO3: Creating production materials

Double page spread:

Contents page:

Photo for the contents page:
Firstly I opened my image up in photo shop.

I then duplicated the layer
Then I set the brush for what I would think would be good for the picture.
I drew a path around Lewis.
I then applied a stroke path.
It then applied the outline.
The outline didn't look good so I removed it.
I decided to make the image darker as it was a bit washed out, so I used the curves tool to darken it a  bit.

I used the rectangle tool and the text tool to add a contents list.
I carried on doing this to create an entire list:

Front page

I created two custom shape graphics and made one black and one white and put the black one in the white one.
I then used the rubber tool to sharpen the edges:

For another front page graphic, I took a circle and a rectangle and I applied a warp to the rectangle.
I then adjusted this so it bent around the circle correctly.
I then added text and bent that to fit the circle.

For one of the cover lines I used the rectangle tool to draw rectangles:

I then added text to link to an article in the magazine:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I thought the outline work on the contents page picture as it made Lewis stand out more on the photo which I think would have worked well because Lewis would be seen as important and would be what the reader would want to focus on rather than the background, sadly this did not look  good as it just did not work with the photo so I removed it. I also made it look darker so Lewis didn't look as washed out and it suits this gene as photos in other magazines surrounding similar genres, such as Kerrang, they use dark photos as this suits the genre because the rock genre is very dark. I used the rectangle tool to order the contents page to make it easier for the reader to use the contents page and to use sections to put the different pages in these sections to further make it even more organised. I used the spiky star like graphic to represent the ticket giveaway, as this is represented as special and is eye catching, which is a way the ticket give away should be represented as special because that will be seen as also it being eye-catching as it could persuade the consumer to buy the magazine. Both cover lines are designed to stand out and the second cover line about Amy follows conventions of a magazine as this cover line is similar to other cover lines used on magazines. This type of coverline is popular as it makes the text more bold and stands out more making the reader more likely to read it meaning it's more likely to be advertised. The first cover line about Billy I think it is good because it really stands out amongst the front page as it has the words exclusive twice on it which is a word that is likely to catch the readers attention, the banner going around the circle give room to talk about Billy Knight.
