LO4: Client and focus group feedback

Feedback:

The survey - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/PRXMC2S
From the responses it is clear that my masthead does not fit in with my magazine because of the colour it is. For the front page the coverline is grabbing which is good, the photograph is also good on this page. Although it could do with more coverlines. For the contents the colour and the layout is a strength that it has however both images could be better. For my double page spread the photo is good and the colours are constant but the text is hard to read and the font used is slightly childish.

I got feedback from the client:

From this feedback it's clear that my front cover is good because of the masthead and photo but the colours are not the same as my contents and DPS so it doesn't create a brand like it should and it really needs to for the first issue. Also my grammar and spelling in my body copy is very bad and needs to be fixed.

LO4: Evidence of editing

Double page spread:

I used the rectangle tool to create banners for text:

This makes it a lot easier to read.
I also used the rectangle tool to make my headline white.

Contents page:

Photo for the contents page:
Firstly I opened my image up in photo shop.

I then duplicated the layer
Then I set the brush for what I would think would be good for the picture.
I drew a path around Lewis.
I then applied a stroke path.
It then applied the outline.
The outline didn't look good so I removed it.
I decided to make the image darker as it was a bit washed out, so I used the curves tool to darken it a  bit.

I used the rectangle tool and the text tool to add a contents list.
I carried on doing this to create an entire list:
I used the rectangle frame tool to place a photo on my contents page, firstly I drew the box:
Then I used the place option in the file drop down menu

I then found the picture using the finder menu that popped up and adjusted it to fit the box

Front page

I created two custom shape graphics and made one black and one white and put the black one in the white one.
I then used the rubber tool to sharpen the edges:

For another front page graphic, I took a circle and a rectangle and I applied a warp to the rectangle.
I then adjusted this so it bent around the circle correctly.
I then added text and bent that to fit the circle.

For one of the cover lines I used the rectangle tool to draw rectangles:

I then added text to link to an article in the magazine:

For the picture I first put the photo in photoshop and duplicated the layer.

I then put a high pass filter on the duplicated layer:
I set it to a radius of 4 pixels:
I set blending mode to vivid light:
Once I had done this I flattened the layers and duplicated it again:
I then added another high pass filter on it:
And set the radius to 6.9:
I then turned the opacity of that layer down to 40%:
Then I flatten the layers and I duplicated the layers again:
To this layer I added a gaussian blur:

And I set it to 4 pixels:
I moves the layer without the blur to the top of the layers and added a hide all mask layer:
And I used a brush to make Lewis clear but it kept the background blurry:
I used this effect as it really shows the genre as this is a dark rock style that I really think will go with the look of the rest of my magazine. Also since the background is blurred it keeps focus on Lewis.

The Masthead

I decided it was time to update my masthead as it didn't look rock enough and it had to fit the genre.

I used the gradient tool and plastic wrap to give it a metallic effect, sadly this did not pull off the effect I hoped as it suited more of a metal music genre then rock, I decided the masthead also wan't suitable for my magazine so I completely restarted.
I started over with this new logo as it is loud and damaged which is similar to Kerrangs or alternate press, then I got to work on editing it>
I created a guitar graphic to go in the logo as this could be a icon for my magazine and it has the right connotations for my genre.
But when I actually put it in it just didn't seem to fit, it felt forced in like it wasn't meant to be there.
I started to mess around with patterns, textures and shadows to find a Logo that fit in and stood out.

I removed the guitar as it just didn't fit in with the logo, and I settled on this deign as it stood out and was very loud like my style of music, it's also a memorable logo. After inspiration for other magazines I added a banner at the top which will have in it the name of Amy the singer and two. photo of her.
