LO2: Laws

Consent

The law that makes is illegal to take someone else's intellectual property and publish it without consent.
The copyright law allows producers of content to protect their intellectual property.
On my contents page I will have many pictures on it so I will need to make sure that the photos I use are all my own. On my first double page spread I will use Baily Street's logo so I will need their permission to allow me to use their logo.
I will have a advertisement on the inside of the front page so I will need permission to use their Logos.
To adder to  copyright we need to use all our own intellectual property which we are doing as I am designing my own graphics and masthead, I'm also taking all my own photos also I need to  make sure we do not use anyone else's for example a photo or graphic. If you wish to use someone else's intellectual property you need permission you can get that through messaging/emailing them or through a consent form.

Obscene Publications law

It is illegal to content that could have a negative effect on the reader.
my audience are young adults so it is my duty of care to make sure that what I publish is suitable for them.
My magazine is targeted at more of a male audience, with a 72% male readership rate and a 28% female readership. I've got to make sure that even though my target audience is male I've still got to make sure that my magazine is not discrimitory to females as this will still have a negative effect on the male audience and upset the female audience. The target age that my magazine is targeting is 16, I need to make sure, with my magazine being a rock magazine, that I don't show anything unsutible for a 16 year olds like drinking and doing drugs. With it being a Sheffield magazine I need to make sure I include all ethnicity's as Sheffield is a very diverse city, If I leave any ethnicity out it could upset and anger that ethnicity and decrease my readership. With my magazine including interviews of bands I can not be sure what they are going to say so I will have to censor the swearing to make it suitable for the 16 year old audience.
I will make sure I adhere to this law by not including any photos which could have a negative influence on the 16 year old audience and I will think about all ethnicity's and try to include all ethnicities in my magazine.

Libel

for our bodycopy or any written statement in our magazine it is illegal to to publish defamatory content about a person or publish untrue information.
Because I am talking about real bands so I need to make sure that when I talk about them it doesn't harm their reputation. I need to make sure any facts and sources that I use are reliable such as ones that end in .gov and .org. I must reference where I get any information from such as in my magazine I will be using an interview to get information for my magazine, I will need to use quote marks to prove that someone has said something, also to avoid libel I will have to give my written magazine back to the band I have interviewed which will be Baily Street and get their permission to publish it, I will also get them to sign a release and consent form.
I will make sure that I adhere to this law by subediting it, which is where I will read through anything I have written and make sure it is not defamatory.

Laws of content / content of court

This is restrictions on what we can report on. It may limit me on what we can report on. It is a criminal offence to publish content that poses a risk to justice in proceedings. It prevents magazines from publishing anything that is too over the top and might influence the outcome of that court case.
It means that we can only report on the facts and don't accuse someone of anything and influence and compromise a court case that is ongoing.
I could adhear to this law by using language like allegedly or according to.
This law could link to my magazine as my genre of music links a to underage drinking or drug use.
An example of a court case that would link to my genre is:

Ethical issues

An ethical issue is one that is not against the law but could be morally bad or upset your audience.
Because I am using multiple bands I need to make sure that they are diverse and I include bands of multiple ethnicities, genders and sexuality so I don't discriminate against anyone and I don't upset my audience. I need to make sure that I show people having a good time at a gig without showing them drinking or doing drugs, I could also include the drink aware logo in to make sure people understand the dangers of drinking. I also need to think about how much people earn especially with my magazine being targeted at a C2DE audience especially when it comes to gigs and how much they cost I will make sure that I don't include gigs that are too expensive.
